Adlestrop
Yes, I remember Adlestrop –
The name, because one afternoon
Of heat the express train drew up there
Unwontedly. It was late June.
.
The steam hissed. Someone cleared his throat.
No one left and no one came
On the bare platform. What I saw
Was Adlestrop – only the name
.
And willows, willow herb and grass,
And meadowsweet, and haycocks dry,
No whit less still and lonely fair
Than the high cloudlets in the sky.
.
And for that minute a blackbird sang
Close by, and round him, mistier,
Farther and farther, all the birds
Of Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire

Rutland League Division 2 (at East Carlton)
City CC 133 all out (33.3 overs)
lost to
East Carlton 137 for 7 (35.2 overs)
Umpires: Andy Watson & Eddie McGeown
Not an easy wicket at East Carlton (mid-way between Market Harborough and Corby) and in a low scoring match, the hosts squeaked through, in an entertaining encounter in which fortunes swung throughout the afternoon.

Smithfield Uttoxeter 4
Red Lion 2
Referee: Elliot Newman. Attendance: 30
Admission: F.O.C. Programme: NONE
A new ground in The Summer League, at Oldfields Middle School in the town. The pitch was narrow, bumpy and completely unshorn in one corner. The visitors, who are propping up the table, started with ten men (no substitutes) and took the lead within two minutes. The hosts pulled level by half-time, and, in the second half, imposed their authority to gain a convincing victory. Hoppers, including John Main, Martin Hayden and Tony Morehead, made up about half of the spectators present!

Brixworth (won toss) 112 for 7 in 26 overs
by three wickets

A good toss to win and The visitors took full advantage, aided by some injudicious shots from the home batsmen, who nonetheless managed a tenth wicket stand of twenty-six. Brixworth captured a nervous victory after spirited bowling from the hosts.

This match was played at rustic Mayfield’s recreation pitch which slopes from goal to goal and dips quite severely over the far touchline. The hosts, I presume, have some affiliation with the Royal Oak hostelry on the A52 outside the village and Pavilion play their home games in Ashbourne a mile or two down the road. Tonight, the visitors were dominant. They started with a first minute penalty and scored four more and had one disallowed before the hosts struck right on half time. The second half – which also brought the rain – was a non event compared to the rip-roaring opening period. Many thanks to both sides for supplying teams and substitutes. With John Main.

National Schools T20 Knock-out Cup Regional Final (at Stamford School)
Trent College (Nottingham) 185 for 8 (20 overs)
defeated
Stamford School 156 all out (19.3 overs)
by 29 runs
Umpires: Martyn Dobbs & Eddie McGeown
The regional final turned out to be a fiercely competitive match. Stamford School won the toss and invited Trent College to bat on a benign wicket and the visitors took full advantage, starting with a six from the first ball of the innings. They made the most of the power play, reaching 54 for 1 off the first six overs. It took them twelve overs to reach one hundred runs, but they also lost four wickets. They kept the nine an over rate all the way to the end of the innings. Stamford started disastrously, losing a wicket in the first over and four more by the end of the power play to leave them struggling on 45 for 5. It took them until the fifteenth over to reach one hundred runs, but they were 8 wickets down. The ninth wicket produced a stand of 61 runs, but it was never going to be enough and the last wicket fell to a brilliant single-handed running catch on the boundary to seal victory for Trent Collage with three balls remaining and cue noisy and raucous celebrations!
